Going Underground at Woodhead Tunnel
The idea of a national electricity grid for Britain was first suggested in 1925 as an alternative to the series of small, local networks which left the country with an inefficient, fragmented electricity infrastructure. An act of parliament was passed, the Central Electricity Board created and Britain’s national electricity grid went into operation for the first time in 1938.
