Underlining the Need to Use a Licensed Asbestos Contractor
13 June 2011
The HSE has prosecuted an East Midlands contractor for exposing workers to asbestos on a site in Derby, underlining the need for contractors to use licensed asbestos contractors.
The workers were employed to remove asbestos containing materials (ACMs), from the former Allens Printers building in Derby prior to the building’s demolition. The principal contractor, who has already been prosecuted for its failings in this case, provided a survey which detailed the location of asbestos on the site and the need or a licensed contractor to be used.
The work was subsequently carried out by unlicensed and untrained workers, using inadequate procedures and with ineffective protection, putting the workers at risk due to the large volumes of asbestos on site.
Wayne Priestley, who employed the workers, was ordered to serve 300 hours of community service within a 12 month period and ordered to pay costs of £500.
